Dog Boy Photobombs Keith Richards

Yes folks, Dog Boy showed up at a recent Rolling Stones show, slipped onto Charlie's drum kit and totally photo-bombed Keith!

Actually, it's a 9" x 12" acrylic painting I just finished -- priced at $175, postage included.

I'm headed back to Oaxaca as of Aug 21st, so this particular work is available until Aug 20th.

My New Oaxaca Painting Blog

In December of 1979, I took a BFA degree at UMass Amherst with a concentration in painting. Back then, as now, this degree plus a couple bucks got you a cup of coffee!

While I do indeed love painting, I've spent the ensuing 30 plus years as a cartoonist, pumping out an endless series of comic books and graphic novels.

Now, living in the sublime city of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, I'm called to paint again. I'm going to cart my painting kit around town, looking for the odd juxtaposition of cool stuff that catches my eye. Don't expect beautiful scenes of splendor -- there are plenty of tourist brochures full of that!
Do expect odd scenes where the surreal details of Mexican life are underlined in bright colors.

I've started a new blog to post the paintings as I make them, called Steve Lafler Paintings. Did I mention I'll be selling the canvases? You bet! So keep your eyes peeled, art lovers!
This one above is called Calle Carranza, Old & New. It's a 9" x 12" acrylic.

The wooden palapa was built by Stephan, estilo rustico. Stephan is quite a craftsman and it shows. Hell, he's an artist. A Oaxaca resident by way of Germany.

Anybody who loves comic art and painting, do yourself a favor and check out the work of the brilliant & wholly unique J.R. Williams.

Over the last 25 years, J.R. has been one of the funniest guys in alt comix, and now he's painting up a storm. Well worth a peek.

Cave Paintings & Howlin' Wolfman

Since moving to Oaxaca last year, it's been my ambition to begin painting again. I'd actually taken a degree in painting some 29 years ago, so the will to sling paint around has a precedent in my life.
I've painted in fits and starts for the past six years, and it's been both gratifying and frustrating. The process of creating color images with paint is so thrilling, but of course difficult as I have yet to master the tools and techniques.
In any case, I've been at it for a few weeks here and tonight I'm posting some of the early results. As I continue, I will be marketing the new work via various web channels.

Once I have a decent inventory I'll begin a gallery search; I hope to find at least one west coast and one New York/east coast gallery to represent me (any hot gallery tips, please zip me an email).

It will be a gradual process, as I'll court the muse on her own terms--and meanwhile I continue work on my next graphic novel, El Vocho, which is of course a full time job in it's own right.

As I create more canvases and get my marketing figured out, I'll post more here about my budding painting career.
